Throw Pillow Size Guide: How to Choose Pillows for Your Sofa, Bed and Chairs

The right throw pillows can make a sofa look finished, a bed look inviting and a reading chair feel like your favorite spot in the house. The wrong sizes can make the same furniture look cluttered or bare. This guide walks through the standard pillow sizes, how many to use and how to mix them, so you can shop with confidence.

Common throw pillow sizes

  • 18 x 18 inches: a versatile square that suits apartment sofas, loveseats and accent chairs.
  • 20 x 20 inches: the most popular size for standard sofas. Large enough to look generous, small enough to leave room to sit.
  • 22 x 22 inches: an oversized square for deep sectionals, king beds and modern low sofas.
  • 14 x 20 and 14 x 24 inches (lumbar): rectangular pillows that support the lower back and add a horizontal layer in front of squares.
  • 14 x 36 inches (long lumbar): stretches across a bed or bench for a clean, tailored finish.

Match the pillow to the furniture

A simple rule: the deeper and taller the seat back, the larger the pillows can be. On a standard three-seat sofa, two or three 20x20 pillows work well. On a deep sectional with a high back, step up to 22x22 for the back layer so the pillows don't look lost. For an accent chair, choose one 18x18 square or a single lumbar pillow. Two pillows on a chair usually leave no room to sit.

Beds follow the same logic. A queen bed looks balanced with two 20x20 or 22x22 squares in front of the sleeping pillows, finished with one lumbar pillow in the center. A king bed can take three squares, or two squares and a long 14x36 lumbar.

How many pillows to use

Odd numbers tend to look relaxed and collected, while even numbers look symmetrical and formal. Both work; choose based on the feel you want.

  • Loveseat: 2 squares, or 2 squares and 1 lumbar.
  • Standard sofa: 2 squares on each end, or 2 squares and 1 lumbar in the middle.
  • Sectional: 2 squares in each corner, plus a lumbar or two along the long side.
  • Bed: sleeping pillows, then 2 to 3 decorative squares, then 1 lumbar.

Layer sizes from back to front

Designers usually layer pillows from largest to smallest. Start with your biggest squares against the back, add a slightly smaller square in front, then finish with a lumbar pillow. Each layer should be about 2 inches smaller than the one behind it, so a 22x22 back layer pairs naturally with a 20x20 middle layer and a 14x24 lumbar in front.

Mix patterns, colors and textures

A reliable formula is one solid, one pattern and one texture. For example:

  • A solid or subtle woven square in your main color.
  • A patterned pillow, such as stripes, geometric designs or embroidery, that repeats that color.
  • A textured accent, such as pom-poms, tassels, braids or fringes, to add depth.

Keep patterns at different scales, so a large geometric design sits next to a small stripe rather than another large print. Limit the palette to two or three colors that already appear in the room, such as a rug, curtains or artwork.

Inserts and fill

A pillow is only as good as its insert. A well-filled insert gives a full, plump shape that holds up to daily use. Many of our decorative pillows come with the insert included and a zipper closure, so the cover is easy to remove and the pillow is ready to use the day it arrives.

Indoor vs. outdoor pillows

Patio and porch pillows need covers made for the outdoors, usually polyester, that resist fading and dry quickly. Bring them inside during heavy rain and store them dry in the off-season. Indoor cotton pillows with embroidery or handwoven details should stay inside, away from moisture and direct sun.

Caring for decorative pillows

We recommend spot cleaning all our pillows. Embroidery, handwoven textures, tassels and pom-poms can lose their shape in a washing machine. Blot spills right away with a clean, damp cloth and mild soap, then let the pillow air dry. Fluff pillows regularly so the fill stays evenly distributed.

Refresh with the seasons

Changing a few pillow covers is the fastest way to update a room. Swap in lighter colors and outdoor-ready designs for spring and summer, warmer tones for fall, and festive Christmas throw pillows for the holidays. Keep your base squares neutral and rotate only the accent pillows to save money and storage space.

Quick reference

  • Small sofa or chair: 18x18 squares.
  • Standard sofa: 20x20 squares plus a 14x24 lumbar.
  • Sectional or king bed: 22x22 squares plus a 14x36 or 14x24 lumbar.
  • Layering: each layer about 2 inches smaller than the one behind it.
  • Styling: one solid, one pattern, one texture.
