How to Care for Gold Flatware So It Keeps Its Shine

Gold flatware turns an ordinary dinner into an occasion. With a little care, it keeps that warm glow for years. This guide covers how to wash, dry and store gold silverware, what to avoid, and how to style it on your table.

What gold flatware is made of

Most gold flatware, including ours, is stainless steel with a gold-colored finish. Many of our flatware sets use a PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating, which bonds the color to the steel for a durable, even finish. The steel underneath gives strength; the finish gives the color. Good care is mostly about protecting that finish.

Hand wash for the longest life

We recommend hand washing gold flatware to preserve the finish and extend its life. Dishwasher detergents are abrasive and high heat can dull the shine over time, especially on hammered or matte textures.

  1. Rinse pieces soon after the meal so acidic foods like tomato, citrus and vinegar don't sit on the surface.
  2. Wash in warm water with a mild dish soap.
  3. Use a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid steel wool, scouring pads and the rough side of a sponge.
  4. Rinse well with clean water.

Dry right away

Water spots are the most common reason gold flatware looks dull. Dry each piece immediately with a soft, lint-free towel instead of leaving it on a rack. For extra shine, give each piece a quick buff with a dry microfiber cloth.

What to avoid

  • Bleach and cleaners that contain chlorine.
  • Abrasive powders, scrubbing pads and metal polish made for solid silver.
  • Soaking for hours in the sink.
  • Storing pieces wet or tossed loosely in a drawer where they scratch each other.

Store it carefully

Keep flatware in a lined drawer organizer or its original gift box, with each piece in its own slot. Separating pieces prevents scratches and keeps sets together. If you only bring out gold flatware for holidays, wrap pieces in soft cloth before storing.

Removing spots and fingerprints

For light water spots, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a drop of white vinegar, then rinse and dry immediately. For fingerprints, a dry microfiber cloth is usually enough.

Styling gold flatware

Gold works with almost any table, from crisp white plates to dark stoneware. A few ideas:

  • Classic: white dinnerware, white linen napkins and gold napkin rings.
  • Modern: matte black plates with mirror-polished gold flatware for contrast.
  • Holiday: deep green or burgundy napkins, gold candle holders and a simple greenery runner.
  • Mixed metals: pair gold forks and spoons with black or silver knives for a curated, collected look.

Choosing the right set

Many of our sets are service for 4, with 20 pieces covering dinner forks, salad forks, dinner knives, dinner spoons and teaspoons. To serve more guests, buy two sets or add individual pieces such as dinner forks, soup spoons and serving pieces from our handmade flatware collection. Many sets arrive in a gift box, which makes gold flatware a popular wedding, anniversary and housewarming gift.

Quick care checklist

  • Rinse soon after use.
  • Hand wash with mild soap and a soft sponge.
  • Dry immediately and buff with a soft cloth.
  • Avoid bleach, abrasives and long soaks.
  • Store pieces separately in a lined organizer or gift box.
